Tolvik publish eagerly awaited Energy from Waste Statistics for 2020

Tolvik has published today its seventh annual UK Energy from Waste Statistics report which provides a comprehensive overview of data on the UK EfW sector for 2020.

Above all, this year’s report highlights the resilience of the UK EfW sector to the effects of COVID-19.

  • In 2020 the tonnage of Residual Waste processed at EfWs in the UK was up 10.5% when compared with the previous year to just under 14 Million tonnes.
  • At the end of 2020, there were 55 EfWs fully operational or in late commissioning and 15 EfWs in construction.  A number of new investors also entered the sector during the year as 2020 was arguably the busiest year in terms of M&A activity.  With this has come increased leveraged finance at both corporate and asset level.
  • The total Headline Capacity of EfWs which were operational or in construction during 2020 increased by 1.7Mt when compared with 2019 to 20.20Mt.
  • Improved turbine availability and two new heat exporting EfWs means that energy generation in terms of heat and power exports increased significantly.  During 2020, EfWs in the UK exported 7,762GWh of electricity – approximately 2.5% of the UK total net power generation – together with 1,651GWh of heat.
