Tolvik has published its 10th UK Energy from Waste Statistics report and identified the following key metrics for 2023.
- In 2023 Residual Waste inputs to the 60 operational EfWs increased to 16.1Mt from both new facilities achieving full operations and a strong performance by some larger merchant EfWs. However, the average availability of the UK fleet reduced for the third year in succession to a fleet average of 86.6%. Power exports increased to 9,676GWh, maintaining 3.1% of UK power generation. Heat exports remained unchanged.
- The average Net Calorific Value (NCV) of inputs for plants receiving untreated waste reduced by 0.26MJ/kg to 9.52MJ/kg. This reduction came despite a slight increase in the portion of higher NCV Residual C&I Waste being processed.
- In 2023 48 EfWs in England reported carbon emissions. The (capacity) weighted average of CO2 emissions per tonne of Residual Waste input reported has been relatively static over the last 5 years at 0.98t of CO2 per tonne of waste. The average reported biogenic content of Residual Waste combusted by the reporting EfWs was 53.5% (2022: 52.5%).
- Tolvik estimates the total UK operational capacity for the thermal treatment of Residual Waste for plants in operation and in construction to be 21.0Mtpa.
