The Future of Landfill?
December 2011
The 2011 Market Briefing Report: 'The Future of Landfill?' report provides an overview of the future of landfill in England. The Report provides a number of scenarios projecting future level of inputs into landfills under various recycling rate and Residual Waste Treatment Facility (RWTF) assumptions, to establish a range of potential outcomes for the landfill market in England estimating that by 2020 there will be about 55 remaining operational non-hazardous landfills in England - the equivalent to one per county.
Using Tolvik's in-house research and database, the report suggests that that whilst there is no reason to be complacent, it is difficult not to conclude that, helped by the 2010 change in the definition of municipal waste, England is on track to comfortably meet its 2020 Landfill Directive target.
The Report also includes an overview of the challenging future faced by landfill operators with the potential for falling gate fees, increased competition from Residual Waste Treatment facilities and declining revenues from landfill gas balance. The key to maintaining a profitable landfill business will be to carefully monitor the local market, maintain dialogue with the regulators, actively manage void (and cost base), and where possible identify additional revenue opportunities.
The 35 page report also includes:
- An expert view from DAC Beechcroft on potential planning implications;
- An analysis of current and future landfill economics including projected gate fee ranges;
- Market share for each of the major landfill operators.
